Step-by-step guide

Connect ChatGPT

Add Relai to ChatGPT as an MCP server, sign in, choose what ChatGPT can read, and ask your first question about your book.

In this guide›

Before you start

Relai connects to ChatGPT through MCP, the Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that lets an assistant call a set of tools on another service. Relai runs an MCP server that offers ChatGPT tools for reading your workspace and, if you allow it, sending text in for your review. ChatGPT adds a server like this as a custom app, from its developer mode.

Which ChatGPT plans can add custom MCP apps, and whether a workspace admin must enable developer mode first, is decided by OpenAI and changes over time. OpenAI's guide to developer mode and MCP apps has the current plan and workspace requirements.

You also need a Relai account that belongs to the workspace you want ChatGPT to read, and the workspace must allow AI assistants. It does by default; an owner or admin can turn it off under Settings → AI assistants.

Add Relai to ChatGPT as an MCP server

01

Copy the Relai server address

This is the endpoint ChatGPT will connect to. It is the same for every member of the workspace.

/api/mcp
02

Open Plugins in ChatGPT settings

In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Plugins. If Plugins is missing, developer mode is not enabled for your account or workspace yet; see Troubleshooting below.

03

Add an MCP server

Choose Add, then Add MCP server.

04

Choose the Streamable HTTP type

Select Streamable HTTP as the server type. Relai's server speaks this transport; the other options will not connect.

05

Name it Relai and paste the endpoint

Name the plugin Relai, paste the server address into the MCP server endpoint field and save. Leave any authentication fields on their defaults: Relai registers ChatGPT as a client on its own and asks you to sign in in the next step.

Sign in to Relai and choose what ChatGPT can do

01

Connect the saved plugin

After saving, ChatGPT asks you to connect or authenticate the Relai plugin and opens a Relai page in your browser.

02

Sign in with your Relai account

If you are not already signed in, Relai asks you to sign in. Use the same account you use in the app. If you belong to more than one workspace, Relai then asks you to choose one. A connection belongs to one person and one workspace; you can connect another workspace separately later.

03

Allow access

The page reads "ChatGPT wants to access your Relai workspace" and lists three permissions in plain words. Reading your roster, contracts, deals and tasks is always on. Reading wages and commission, and sending text into Relai for your review, are each your choice and are ticked by default. Untick either, then choose Allow access.

04

Return to ChatGPT

Relai sends you back to ChatGPT, where the plugin now shows as connected. The connection also appears under Settings → AI assistants in Relai, with its permissions and an activity log.

Ask a first question

Start a new chat in ChatGPT and enable the Relai plugin for it, from the tools or plus menu in the composer. Then try a question that only your workspace can answer:

Which of my players' playing contracts end in the next twelve months, and who at the club is my contact for each?

ChatGPT reads your roster and contracts through Relai and answers with a link to each record. Open a link to check the record in Relai. If you allowed ChatGPT to send text in, you can also tell it about a conversation and ask it to log it. That arrives in your Inbox as a captured source labelled ChatGPT, and Relai turns it into proposals for you to approve or reject. Nothing is saved to a record until you approve it.

Troubleshooting

01

There is no Plugins option, or no Add MCP server

Custom MCP apps live behind ChatGPT's developer mode, and it depends on your plan. In a ChatGPT workspace an admin may need to enable it for members first. Check OpenAI's guide for the plans that include it. Relai cannot change what ChatGPT shows.

02

The server will not save or connect

Check that the type is Streamable HTTP and that the endpoint is exactly the address above, with no trailing path or space. Then try the connection again.

03

Sign-in fails or the page says the request expired

The connection request from ChatGPT is only valid for a short time. Close the Relai tab, go back to ChatGPT and connect the plugin again, then complete sign-in in one go. If your browser blocks pop-ups, allow them for ChatGPT and retry. Make sure you sign in with the account that belongs to the workspace you want; a different Relai account will not see it.

04

ChatGPT says AI assistant access is turned off for this workspace

An owner or admin has switched off Allow AI assistants under Settings → AI assistants. Your connection is kept, and works again as soon as they turn it back on. If the workspace's subscription has lapsed, the same page says so and links to billing.

05

ChatGPT connected, but cannot see wages or cannot send text in

Those two permissions were unticked when you allowed access. Open Settings → AI assistants in Relai, choose Edit access on the ChatGPT connection and turn them on. Access you turn on takes effect when ChatGPT next connects, so start a new chat.

06

ChatGPT stopped working after you changed your password

Changing your password or signing out of all devices disconnects your assistants too. Connect the plugin again from ChatGPT.
